Lakhisarai District

Lakhisarai district was established on the 3rd of July 1994 or 1990. Before coming into existence as a new district, Lakhisarai was a sub-division within Munger District. Historians established on the basis of analysis of evidences, that this place was a reputed religious center for the Hindus in the period of Pal. The ruler of that time was fond of making Temples and other religious spots. It is one of the reasons that there are so many temples and other  religious places within this region.

The district can be divided into three parts viz. (i) Hilly area (ii) Flood hit area and (ii) Plain area. The hilly area comprises of hill series and rocks like Kachhua hills, Kajra mountains up to Abhaipur and Jaynagar Mountains including forest area. Almost whole of Pipariya block and some part of Barahiya is considered as flood hit area. This area remains almost drowned in rainy season. But so far as cultivation and agriculture is concerned this area is called the stock of food Grains. Rest of the part except Hilly and flood hit area is plain area with full greenery and cultivable land. The district is easily reachable through its proper road and rail linkages. On the one hand 60% of the villages possess metallic roads and on the other hand NH 80 connects it to other states of India. Kiul Junction is one of the prime landmarks of this place.Being part of the erstwhile Pal Dynasty, Lakhisarai is popular among tourists for its religious significance. The place has many famous temples, some of which even dates back to its first ruler.

Large number of historical monuments is lying around this modern town.  Remains of Buddhist and Brahmanical antiquities are lying un guarded un protected in around 30-35 square Kilometre from this place. The area was explored by Cunningham and Beglar in 19th century and in second quarter of 20th century few Indian scholars also visited the place and collected evidences from this place and subsequently they have reported them also. But all the earlier explorations were limited to identification of Buddhist monuments or collection of inscriptions. In an extensive exploration of this region has revealed many interesting facts undisclosed about Early medieval historiography. There are more than thirty five unexcavated big mounds in the area. Between the mounds there are ponds and lakes. One of the lakes from this place is mentioned in Hsua T Sang’s account of 6th cent. A.D. From the mounds, ponds and lakes more than hundred Buddhist and Brahmanical sculptures have been collected. Nine Buddhist sculpture carries inscription on their pedestal. Stylistic analysis of these sculptures suggests us Early medieval period, and different phases of construction activities. Few brick structures over the mounds are exposed due to natural erosions or encroachments by the local people. Overall survey and decipherment of inscriptions from the region suggests us existence of a large religious city in the lower Ganga valley during Early medieval period. After corroborating with the contemporary literary source, this site can be identified as stupa of Chaliya parvat, where Buddha spent his 19th rainy season.

Also, according to historian Sri Radha Krishna Chaudhary all the Buddha mathas were situated in southern side of Ganga and the king of Pal Bans was also a Buddhist. This region of Lakhisarai was ruled over in seventh century to eleventh century by the administrator of Pal Bans. Sen family also ruled this region for some period in 11th century.
