The Kosi road bridge is a part of the east-west corridor that connect Silchar in Assam and Porbandar in Gujarat. The construction of the 1878 km long, 39 spans, four-lane bridge started in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs 418 crore. It is India’s largest bridge with box girder segments. In early thirties, only a rail bridge connected Nirmali and Bhaptiahi. The rudiments of this British period’s rail-line are still visible at Raharia village presently languishing between the two Kosi embankments. Now a day have both road and rail bridge running parallel to each other.Former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee had laid the foundation of the rail bridge on june 6, 2003. The rail bridge was started on the estimated cost Rs 325 crore. It conect Nirmali terminus station of Darbhanga- Sakari- Jhanjharpur- Nirmali meter gauge section with Saaigarh station of Saharsa-Forbesganj meter gauge route and provide a link to Northern Frontier Raiway. Former rail minister late L.N.. Mishra had initiated some steps to restore the washed away rail bridge, but it was Ram Vilas Paswan who for the first time in 1996 announced the government’s decision to under-take an extensive survey of the Nirmali- Bhaptiahi rail- link project. But all credit goes to former rail minister Nitish kumar, on whose initiative this kosi rail bridge was included in the list of four mega rail bridges adopted under Prime Minister’s rail development project.

As said, earlier some thieves tried to steal away this stone but could not do so. They had to abandon the stone before they get out of the periphery, as they turned blind and the stone itself came back to it’s original position.
